Mark rocking out a mid-80s HalloweenSome of my favorite times have been at music concerts, dating back to my college days.

I had the privilege of seeing the iconoclastic jazz group Weather Report several times in its late-’70s heyday. Vintage videos found on YouTube have revived concert memories of the group’s late virtuoso Jaco Pastorius, the best bassist ever. There are even a couple clips with him and other jazz greats on Joni Mitchell’s “Shadows and Light” tour, another great concert I attended in Philly circa 1980.

My love of Genesis through the ’80s fueled my interest in Peter Gabriel. In 1993 I saw him in the old Spectrum on his “Secret World” tour. It was simply the best concert I’ve ever seen. The wonderful music, visuals, and crisp choreography—a hallmark of Gabriel productions—are here to be viewed on delightfully filmed and sound-edited YouTube footage from this tour, along with the lovely voice of Paula Cole.

Though I’ve been in love with the smooth and unique jazz sound of Steely Dan for decades, I’ve had the opportunity to see the band twice recently (in 2009 and 2011) at the Tower Theatre.  More YouTube videos give you a sense of how Becker and Fagan are still getting it done live, with classy musicians and a trio of smooth backup singers.
